Australia-Facebook Conflict

Facebook is a multi-billion dollar company and Australia is a free-spirited cricket-loving and animal haven; many might wonder after reading the first line what do Facebook and Australia have in common? Firstly a social media giant Facebook has to be present in Australia, but that’s not the story. The story is about a ban on Australian user’; accounts to share news and links on the platform. This ban occurred when the Australian government announced that they are set to create a new ‘media code’ in their law. The flourishing company has already started cleansing tons of pages. The continent woke up to empty news feeds! Australian Treasurer Josh Freedenberg called it “wrong”, adding that “Facebook’s actions were unnecessary, they were heavy-handed, and they will damage its reputation here in Australia,” He further

exclaimed the CEO of Facebook and billionaire Mark Zuckerberg gave no warning of this act when they spoke about the issue. The reason Australia committed this act is because they argue that platforms such as Facebook should pay News broadcasting companies for the various links that are present on Facebook. They also believe that this will make the deals between Social Media apps and news companies balanced thus leading to slightly more funds for new companies. All in all, the news is vital for the public hence this issue should be resolved sooner rather than later.
